Mid June on a summer morning that is bright and sunny but with lingering cool air from the previous night, I am driving west on Baseline Drive in Boulder, Colorado. I am headed in the direction of Chautauqua Park, a national historic landmark, cultural center, and easy access point to hiking around and climbing the iconic Boulder Flatirons.
Almost six years prior, I had taken this same path while weekending in Boulder and, after seeing the throngs of hikers fanning out across the foothills, cemented my decision to move half-way across the country for a new life in Colorado.
A few blocks before the park, I turn right onto Lincoln Place. Several blocks down I pull to the curb in front of a small brown-brick bungalow so characteristic of Boulder. The residential neighborhood in this desirable location called “The Hill” contains a mix of charming bungalows that appear as they did at the turn of the century as well as expanded, updated homes now showing more modern Colorado design.
From the street, this home looks as it likely did back in the early 1900s, with a generous front porch, stately door, and classic muntin-style windows.
Emily of Emily Sacco Photography meets me curbside. She is loaded with camera gear and is snapping pictures of the flowering shrubs and roses that line the sidewalk. Together we unload my car of Urban Cottage Style custom-designed, handmade pillows, including vintage and fine designer prints in all-natural linen, vintage barkcloth, and cotton matelassé.
We load bagfuls onto the welcoming brick porch and step inside where I meet the bungalow’s homeowner and her interior designer, Drew Sorrells of Adue Interiors.
Drew has put her fresh, stylish touch on the home’s living room and dining room. The living room is painted in a neutral, so-so-soft light yellow, creating a serene backdrop. The adjacent dining room in a stunning peacock blue adds drama. Period details like the original built-in cabinetry that wrap both sides of the fireplace and an entire wall of the dining room are painted white. The modern-lined, button-tufted, light linen sofa and mirrored cocktail table nod to midcentury Hollywood glam. These are anchored by collected, eclectic art and furnishings from the homeowner's frequent travels to Asia.
An Urban Cottage Style Eames-era botanical barkcloth pillow amps up the living room's midmod vibe.
Urban Cottage Style blue palm tropical barkcloth pillows fit right into the homeowners' collected, international mix of art and funishings.
For the next four hours, the three of us collaborate on which pillows should go where, which angle of the shot looks best, what pillow combinations work best together. I had been pleased with how well each pillow design photographed in my own home as our studio, but I see them today through new eyes. I am thrilled to see their versatility; their textures, colors, and sizes complement the fresh, stylish interiors of this Boulder home.
A few weeks before this day, I’d read a UK design firm’s blog post telling the behind-the-scenes story of their photo shoot. And now here I am with a shot list, props, pillows, and two creative, supportive, amazing women to guide me. You can see results of the Boulder Bungalow photoshoot here as well as throughout our catalog.
Drew's use of peacock blue in the dining room creates a fresh, light backdrop for the homeowner's vintage dining set and Asian cabinet. The chandelier Drew custom-treated adds both glam and playfulness.
We couldn't resist this sweet dining room vignette with garden-fresh roses in our vintage vase. Wall sconce is from the homeowner's private collection.
As I drive home mid-afternoon, I remember the blog post I’d read just a few weeks prior. And I marvel that the experience I’d so recently read about is one that I just enjoyed first-hand.
And to top off the day, the homeowner loved the pillows and ordered three that very day – a pair of 22-inch blue palm tropical barkcloth pillows, which reflect her Hawaiian heritage and which look fresh and welcoming on her green chaise, and our 22-inch P. Kaufmann coral linen pillow to coordinate with the creamy white, soft yellow, and deep coral of her master bedroom.
Score. Surreal score.
The bungalow's built-in cabinetry in the dining room sets the stage for a long row of Urban Cottage Style pillows in all-natural barkcloth, linen, and cotton matelasse.
